Tortoises are reptiles, and a kind of turtle which, over time, adapted to living on land instead of in the water. Scientifically speaking, they are from the Testudinidae family of the Testudines order.

Like other Testudines, they [Tortoises] have a shell to protect them from any threats, or creatues/things that might harm them. Their shell is generally hard and (like other members of the Cryptodira suborder), they retract their necks and heads into the shell to protect themselves.
